This tri-colored woodpecker has a full ruby-red head, black wings with white wing patches, black back, and a pure white belly. Unlike most of the woodpeckers, it forages for food (both insects and nuts) and stores it for eating at a later time. It is truly a North American bird that it does not extend south of the Rio Grande. Length: 22-24 cm Windspan: 41-46 cm Lifespan: at least 10 years
